Lesson 1: CAR CONTROLS AND SAFETY CHECKS including the roadworthiness of the vehicle. Understand the vehicles primary and secondary controls and know how to use them correctly. Able to show you know how to use the Footbrake, Handbrake, Steering, Gears, Accelerator and Clutch, Windscreen Wipers and Washer, Lights and Reflectors, Horn, Demisters, Windows Doors and Locks. Routines Cockpit Drill (HNDSSSM) and MSM (Mirror - Signal - Manoeuvre)
Lesson 2: Driving on the straight, Cornering, Negotiating bends and Junctions, Changing Lanes, Entering and Exiting from Slip Roads, Entering and Exiting Junctions and Roundabouts and Correct Positioning within Traffic Lanes. Experience driving in light traffic situations with enough opportunity for positioning your vehicle on the Straight, In Traffic Lanes, On Bends Turning Left and Right, Roundabouts and Approaching and Emerging From Junctions.
Lesson 3: CHANGING DIRECTION Focusing on Observation, Planning and Scanning using techniques in low-risk situations such as quiet residential areas local and rural roads. Will cover routines such as MSM (Mirror, Signal, Manoeuvre) Safety glances and observation when Moving Off, Turning, At Junctions and Negotiating Roundabouts.
Lesson 4: PROGRESSION MANAGEMENT During this lesson you will be able to regulate and maintain good control over the speed of your vehicle in low risk situations. Such as quiet residential areas quiet local and rural roads. controlling speed, speed limits, stopping distances, effects of road and weather conditions and driving too fast.
Lesson 5: CORRECT POSITIONING (2) Positioning your vehicle will include, positioning on the straight, cornering, negotiating bends and junctions, changing lanes entering and exiting to and from slip roads and junctions, roundabouts, reversing, turning, parking and stopping.
Lesson 6: ANTICIPATION AND REACTION You will driver in a variety of road situations, junctions, streets with parked cars, pedestrians, warning signs, open and closed junctions, and or hill brows. Blind spots, junctions, parked vehicles, crossings, roundabouts, motorbikes and cyclist's, road works and pedestrians.
Lesson 7: SHARING THE ROAD By the end of this lesson you should be able to drive with due care and attention for the road and traffic conditions. Including taking appropriated actions when dealing with hazards. You will drive in a variety of road and traffic conditions including junctions, streets and parked cars, pedestrians, give way situations and emergency vehicles if necessary.
Lesson 8: DRIVING SAFELY THROUGH TRAFFIC Primarily this lesson will focus on making sure you can drive with due care and attention where there is a significant volume of other traffic. ie defensive driving, recognizing risks to the safety of other road users and co-operating with other road users. By the end of the lesson you should act appropriately and decisively when driving in traffic. Describe actual and potential risks to other road users and manage them effectively. Demonstrate good level of cooperation with other road users.
EDT Lesson 9 - Changing Direction (B) More Complex Situations Observational and scanning tasks when turning left and right, negotiate junctions, change direction in more complex and challenging situations. Some independent driving will take place if possible and make use of duel carriageways where available.
Lesson 10: SPEED MANAGEMENT Regulate and maintain good control over the speed of the vehicle in more complex or challenging situations. Fast moving traffic situations where speed varies because of speed limits and or traffic conditions. Independent driving will be encouraged. Manage and control speed, drive safely in fast moving traffic where speeds are highly variable and make decisions independently in challenging situations.
Lesson 11: DRIVING CALMLY For most of this lesson independent driving and decision making will take place. Focus will be on staying calm, keeping control of the vehicle in situations where you might be frustrated, exasperated or feel threatened. Fundamentals of being fit to drive and safe loading of vehicles.
Lesson 12: NIGHT DRIVING Use of vehicle lighting correctly and respond to the lights of other road users. Drive through traffic in the dark or in poor lighting conditions. Lesson will take place after dark in a variety of road conditions and situations including rural and urban roads.
